Granny's gone and done it again

I had nearly a $50 store credit since the chicks weren't shipped so I bought two "brooding pavilions" at $25/ea. These are about 8x8" and, of course adjustable as to height. But unlike other brooder plates, these actually get HOT! We had turned one on and initially set it low enough for the chicks to be in contact with it, as we understood that's how these things work, but ... wrong! After a few minutes the chicks started cheeping in distress and I found that even on the lowest heat setting it was too hot to touch.

LATER. They gave me 19 chicks, not 15! :celebrate We've settled all but six under the two broodies and have those six here in the house. They are under the brooder plate, one the lowest heat setting, raised as high as it will go, and the chicks are snoozing peacefully under it.

What breed Blue?
I got 7 Black Australorps and 7 Black Ameraucanas, all pullets, and one Black Ameraucana cockerel. Not sure what the extras are but they are all pullets of those breeds. I had ordered Doms but they didn't hatch, so the Aussies were substitutes. Which is fine.

Dark enough to use a flashlight.

I've only done that once. Had a broody hen sitting on ceramic eggs to keep her broody. Had rejected chicks so I went out with a pin light, held it in my mouth, pulled a ceramic egg out from under her with one hand from the front, and at the same time, stuffed a chick under her from behind. She just settled herself down and happily began talking to her new baby. Did that with each chick and hung around long enough to be sure everything was okay. Happy hen, happy chicks and happy microchick because I didn't have to brood them in the house! Score Score!

Just went out to give the birds some watermelon rinds. There were three does in the orchard early sampling the apples. Little thieves.
Thanks, Chick! I'll do it that way if there is a next time. One of these hens is a broody monster, lol, so putting chicks under her was a... um... adventure, but once she got done doing battle with me she accepted the chicks just fine. It was a bit like giving babies to a feathered alligator, lol. We put her and the chicks in the brooder building. The other is milder hen but ... she's bonded to the nest and we couldn't move her. Tomorrow we'll try moving her, with the chicks, to the brooder shed with the other hen. They've co-parented before .... but Broody Witch was not so fierce. We'll see how it goes.
