I had nearly a $50 store credit since the chicks weren't shipped so I bought two "brooding pavilions" at $25/ea. These are about 8x8" and, of course adjustable as to height. But unlike other brooder plates, these actually get HOT! We had turned one on and initially set it low enough for the chicks to be in contact with it, as we understood that's how these things work, but ... wrong! After a few minutes the chicks started cheeping in distress and I found that even on the lowest heat setting it was too hot to touch.
LATER. They gave me 19 chicks, not 15!
We've settled all but six under the two broodies and have those six here in the house. They are under the brooder plate, one the lowest heat setting, raised as high as it will go, and the chicks are snoozing peacefully under it.
LATER. They gave me 19 chicks, not 15!
