Maybe she was not broody? Just too old and tired to do anything but sit on a nest and grumble?

It's not enough. Every time they use the eggshells to make new shells, the shells lose calcium and their shells become weaker and weaker. They need oyster shell.I have pulverized eggshell to compensate for the hens.
Space heater will be on in the coop.Should be 48° in the morning.
Oh no, she wss broody all right! We let her hatch once and she did good. Then we let her set and gave her and another broody a big batch of chicks to raise and she did great.* When she weaned them she got right back on the nest and has been trying to hatch a golf ball for several weeks. She poofs up and screams at you if you get near. I moved the golf ball to a different nest and she went right to the new nest. And she is barely a year old so age is not a factor. She was still a pullet when she hatched her first chick this spring.Maybe she was not broody? Just too old and tired to do anything but sit on a nest and grumble?
At 48° F heat is not needed in the coop. Now if it was 48° below zero. Maybe yes.Space heater will be on in the coop.
The last 2 years of negative 50 temps was brutal. However, I did get a Christmas card from my power company.![]()
Aunty Em!!! Aunty Em!!!69° by bedtime. Cold front that is bringing the rain sneaking in. Possible hail, high winds, and even tornadoes they say. Guess they are covering their basses.
On a normal day at 9:30am I eat one apple with peanut butter and supper evenings. I don’t usually eat a plate that full.Lol, Granny. This is my lunch today. A Honeycrisp apple, no, HALF an apple, these things are huge! And a little peanut butter for protein.
