Granny's gone and done it again

Nancy made the creamy wild rice soup and I only gave her some chicken broth to replace half the water it called for. Everyone liked it! There was barely any left. Robert seen how everyone was eating and went to the stove and gave it a stir then walked away. That hurt me so bad. He wanted to eat too but couldn't . I said I am so sorry then I couldn't eat either. :hit
It's hard when some family members can't eat what others do, and yes, it's sad sometimes. Melissa can't eat bread but I still bake. She just knows she can't have any. Sometimes she will order a chicken sandwich at a fast food place and take off the top bun. I'm sure one day she'll just eat the meat and lettuce but that has to be her decision. The rest of the family can eat spicy food but I can't. I don't expect them to do without because of me. There are other things I can eat.

Cynthia you should have all the professions covered by a family member! Do you remember the old movie Cheaper By the Dozen?

Granny, I have tiny veins that run when they see a needle coming! I try to drink a lot of water the day before I have to have blood drawn so the veins are more plump.

When I worked in pediatrics at a hospital the nurses used a flashlight to shine light through the tiny arms to see the veins. Now they have a thing called a vein finder.

MC, the worst place I have seen an IV inserted was in a newborn's scalp! Baby was so dehydrated it was the only vein stable enough to support the needle. Then they ran the line over the top of his head and taped it down.
Sure am glad I'm retired!
Yep, been there seen that. We used to have anesthesiologists on call that would come up to neonatal and insert IV catheters into one of the umbilical veins. They get them in and tape them down also. Babies shouldn't have to go through such atrocities but when mommy is an alcoholic and confesses to being drunk the day she came in to deliver and her poor new born is having alcohol withdrawal, you have to do something.

Ya, I understand all that Blue. This was different. I guess it was the first time I saw the sadness in his eyes. The isolation and being different. Most of the time its something he has no interest in trying but because his friend really liked it he felt left out and yes, I seen all this in his eyes. He was hurt.

MC, we had a permanent patient on pediatrics. His name was Matthew. He was born with many problems, had to be on a vent (breathing machine), and a feeding tube. His Mom was a drug addict, no Dad and the Grandparents did not visit often. He became the community baby for us. We took turns holding and rocking him so he had human contact. He lived almost a year. It breaks my heart to see a pregnant woman doing things I know will hurt her baby.

It takes special kinds of nurses to love and care for infants like this day after day when they know how it's going to end. :hugs
