Granny's gone and done it again

We got an appointment today. Yaaayy for that. He wasn't sealing it right and his skin got sore. The pain wasnt all from the laceration. He said he didn't learn anything new but he needed the refresher course. They did give him a bunch of new products to help him.
The thought occurred to me, are there people with dementia that can no longer care for their own ostomy? That wasn't a good thought but I think it could happen
Nursing home or in home nursing care. Usually if people have advanced dementia they will wind up in a home because they are just too much a hand full for family to take care of and their care is too demanding. Memory disorders are thieves that steal the sense of self from the victim. Families whose loved ones I took care of always asked me if their family member with dementia was in any pain and I would tell them no. All the pain is emotional and the family is experiencing that. Their loved one is trapped in a world in their own mind, generally their own little world. If they had pain from something like arthritis or an injury, we watched them for signs of pain and made sure they had medications on board.

I hate dementias and Alzheimers diseases.

well this only took forever to find.

It occurred to me because he didn't know his skin was sore. He had to have a nurse tell him. I think he used to be sharper about such things. I know very little about ostomy care. His GI said he doesn't know much about it either but he wanted to see him last week to make sure he isn't having Crohn's flare.

Possible nerve damage in the skin around the stoma causing lack of sensation? Just a guess.

I had my gall bladder out the old fashioned way. It left me with a 9 inch scar and the skin under that scar is quite without sensation. Can't feel a thing when I touch it and that's been 40 years this year.
I've heard that was a very bloody surgery. I ended up w/ four 1-2 inch scars but I had horrible pain w/ that surgery. Ended up on morphine at home.

Thank you for that. It hadn't occurred to me. I was feeling guilty that I hadn't been a little more sharp myself and noticed his skin was sore
