Maybe you could sit outside and watch the coop from a distance, and see who's poking around trying to grab chickens.

Then you can shine a flashlight on it and scare it off, or shoot and kill it.

Maybe the rooster was trying to scare off the predator, and that's how he got grabbed..

looks like a raccoon, but the good thing about raccoons they're easy to trap I think it might be smart for you to invest in a live trap to take care of the problem, where one comes through their will be another. And so sorry I have had them cheese grade my young pheasants through the cages but all I found were the legs.

The entire bottom 3 ft should be covered in hardware cloth mesh to prevent that sort of thing. Chain link is a type of thing that will allow possibly, even a fox to get in if it is a young one. In fact, chooks regularly poke their heads thru any fence if they can just to nibble at grass. A coon will lie in wait just for that to happen. I know a man who saw two coons do a tag-team thing on his run which was 2x4 welded wire, 8 ft wide. They took turns stampeding the chooks from one side to the other and got 3 in broad daylight before he could get outside to stop it. He was buying hardware cloth the day he told that story.

I have there play house coop, and I leave the door cracked so they can go in at night, and early morning come out, and I see them go to roost...but I had checked and all was fine at 8pm, so this was done either late night or early morning....the only time I lock them up is bad storms....the reason I doint is this coop was made for them when they were babies...so I had 11 of them in there...now they are grown, 5mos and HUGE!!! And they dont fit as good, they cuddle up at night...lol

so I know I need to fix something up for them....all this rain and cold weather hasnt permit, my runs are so muddy back there. Neighbor, wonderful as he is...decided to buy dirt and raise his acerage, so all runs into ours....

I am a pretty light sleeper and when I hear gawking and feathers flapping I wake up my husband, he runs out and shoots what ever is there. It has not failed us yet! You might give this a try incase it is a coon and it comes back for seconds.
