In doing some online research I have come across vent gleet. Does this look like that to you? A friend suggested egg-bound, but I cannot feel any hardness anywhere, only swelling. She appears prolapsed to me, but I've only seen that in sheep and don't know about it with chickens.

She has a white discharge dripping from her hind end, a small amount steadily. She is listless but not "down" as of now, and is still eating and drinking but obviously uncomfortable.

I soaked her in warm water for about 20 minutes, she seemed to enjoy it. Now she is roosting for the night. Any help or suggestions as to what this might be would be so appreciated!

Have you seen the other chickens pecking at her vent? She may have a prolapse, but others are attracted to the red color, and may try to peck at it, causing damage. Sometimes a prolapse can happen at the same time as being egg bound. Her vent looks a little pooched out like she could be egg bound or constipated. Is she passing any stool other than the constant white dripping? Most people treat a prolapse with honey, sugar, or Preparation H ointment to help reduce the swelling. Confining in a darkened crate for 16 hours a day will help to stop laying until she starts to heal. Feeling inside the vent with a lubricated finger, you can try to feel for a stuck egg, and also to see if the vent opening is intact. The warm epsom salt soaks can really help.

Sadly we lost her in the night. I am thinking she must have been egg-bound, with a prolapse due to straining (which I witnessed). I have never had a hen with this before, but she was new to my flock and laid absolutely gigantic eggs. It's the only thing I can figure that would actually kill her that fast. Poor girl. :(

Thanks for your help.

Sorry for your loss. :(
If it happens again in another hen, you might try using a piece of a preparation H suppository, to help decrease the swelling in that area.
