I've sent a PM with directions to the capon clinic to five participants. If you don't receive the PM, please let me know. Plan to arrive between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Come rested and confident. This is going to be a wonderful learning experience.
If you follow the instructions I sent to prepare your birds, then I'll do my best to caponize the 5-month-olds after lunch on Sunday.OMG I feel like what the chicks are like on their 1st day outside-scared and excited at the same time. I'm just going to go ahead and bring 7 around the 5 month age in case by some miracle we can get them done. Coral, have you done that age group in the past? I'll still have others at home but I'll just have to do them later on my own. There's just not enough days in the week to canonize all the pet cockerels I've got :-/
I feel like this is a chance in a lifetime. Coral and Kass, thank you! I hope I can pass the knowledge on someday.
PS Coral, I did get your PM's also.
Thank you! I didn't mean I expected you to do them but if you're able to I'll be so grateful. I'm scared of killing them and these boys are favorites. My plan is to immediately get 10-20 roosters at auctions and constantly practice until I feel confident doing older ones. Then I'm going to do most all the other boys here. My husband and teenaged son had better walk on eggshells around meOMG I feel like what the chicks are like on their 1st day outside-scared and excited at the same time. Yea Poco and Kassaundra, y'all are the best. It's wonderful to find friends that will go the extra mile to help others. This art of caponizing is so important IMO to the young homesteader or just anyone who wants to find a rooster that will taste succulent and juicy after 6 mo old. Butcher anytime. It's a great concept. Looking forward to hearing about the workshop.Looks like we will have a rainy weekend. The cockerels will be in a pen on the side porch before surgery. After surgery they will go into cages with food and water. I'll tarp the cages just in case we have high winds or heavy rain. The porch has a roof, but Oklahoma weather gets weird enough to send the rain in sideways.
Sunday, March 16, Rain / Wind High 45° Low27° Rain / Wind CHANCE OF RAIN: 70% WIND: N at 24 mph![]()
Notebooks are ready, headlamps are charging, capon camp boys are cranky because they only got water this morning. Looks like everything is ready to go. If you're bringing bigger birds, please have an empty cage for them for after surgery. They will want to eat and drink as soon as they are off the table.
Participants: Wear comfortable clothing, avoid dangly earrings, remember to wear your glasses (says the pot to the kettle), have a hair tie handy if you have long hair, and bring a small box if you're planning to take the capons you make home with you.![]()
I can't even make it to my own living room w/o my glasses, much less to your house!!! lolLooks like we will have a rainy weekend. The cockerels will be in a pen on the side porch before surgery.
