GRAPHIC PICS of my day learning to caponize

Question.. on air puffing ? how crucial is it that one deflate ... and how often.,.., or how many day's can you wait to do it..?
reasoning is i'm going out of town for 3 day's next week will that be a problem? after caponizing today.
To treat wind puffs: Place the cockerel on the side that is not inflated. Swap an area that is free of veins with betadine or hydrogen peroxide. Use a scalpel blade #10 or #22 work well to make a tiny incision in the skin. Gently press the bird's side to expel the air. Spritz with Vetericin. Repeat daily of needed. Most birds that get wind puffs don't puff up for more than a few days.

ATTENTION CLINIC PARTICIPANTS: Check the leg bands on your capons. If they were snugly applied, they may be too tight already. Your birds will grow quickly. Don't compromise circulation in the leg with the leg band. Cut off the old leg band and put on a new, looser band.

The vet at OSU told me it'd just go away on it's own and to leave it (I don't think she's very experienced but couldn't get a real answer out of her about her experience). It would seem like it'd be uncomfortable but I'm sure it's far from life threatening to leave it. Only my opinion though and I'm no more experienced than you since we were at the clinic together lol

When the air from the body cavity is trapped under the skin, the skin becomes separated from the muscle tissue. If enough gas/air builds up under the skin, the bird has difficulty walking, standing, sitting, and bending over to eat or drink. When handled, the bird expresses discomfort. I have successfully treated wind puffs by creating a small incision in an area of the puff that is without large blood vessels. Spritzing with Vetericin to help the incision heal quickly minimizes the risk of infection. Left untreated, a bird with wind puffs may not get the rest and nutrition he needs to heal quickly.

So glad to hear how well the class went. The step by step photos of the procedure are great ! They should give folks that want to learn how to caponize but weren't able to make the class, the confidence to learn how to do it by following the illustrations . Great job teachers !

Thanks for that Cora ... on wind puffs.

Well Today was my Caponizing day... 1st time by my self..

I realized how much help i had at clinic..
help to secure fidgeting bird.. , clamping down restraings.. Table that is big enough.. great eye lighting..
and so much more.. Even one who stayed to observe.. just for moral support... < Thanks for that >

so.. i would say today was a success.. just for jumping in..
I worked on 5 birds 4 are alive .. ( one didnt get any thing but the first cut )
I'll post more about troubles.. later ( string broke just as doing the sawing motion ... twice.. ) maybe its operator error of sorts.. ? cora?
I've got the string wraped <finally> all around.. i cross the thread and I was pulling up and down.. / then swiched to < imagine the pink ribbon logo they use for breast cancer survivers..> i hv the sring in the shape like that and pull up with left and then right .

more later.

Sounds like you had a successful day. If the string breaks, perhaps you're putting too much tension on it. Try holding the wire tool with thumb and forefinger and the wire the same way. Once you've got the capon wire all the way around the testicle, you're almost done. The pink ribbon logo is a perfect visual image. Saw gently, without straining. Lift slowly when you no longer feel resistance. There's usually a tiny bit of membrane still attached, so don't panic if the testicle falls back in. You'll be able to retrieve it with your spoon.

Quote: Linda.. I have to to say that I was literally LMAOROTF... while tending to the living in the bathroom last night < Its the recovery room >.
I really needed the break in tension from the Looooong day. Thanks for posting that. it seems that there is not much current knowledge on caponizing.. and the many uses for them. I love the history on this topic and many good ideas need to be re-introduced.

I am curious how long it takes for the Testosterone to abate.. and the temperament to change..
I'm really amazed that - of the Living... they dont hate me.. well maybe one but he didnt like me to begin with.
I am ordering 24 hatching eggs for breeding stock... and I have 3 hens/7 that are doing the broody look.. so It would be nice to do the bait and switch .. with eggs that i let them sit on .. then switch to breeding eggs when they start "sitting".

side note --??? I was letting the eggs sit in 3 boxes.. and it froze last night.. ? Do they ever Hatch.? after being frozen .. < Sorry for off topic ?> ok to reply pm to me with your experience. Thanks

Quote: Sure nice to meet you.. and all the rest.. wish we'd have taken a photo of the group..
nice that we can learn together..

Quote: Thanks for that.
as i recall thats what i did.. making 2 pull s/ second about.

however i think I'll try another knot. at the eye of the string whole.
and .. since i pch'd both kits .. i have enough to have a back up < lesson learned > should it happen again.
< threading under pressure ! Ughh ! >

I didnt take time to see which instrument broke the stringand how it was tied on .. however operator error of some kind must be happening if its never happened to you.

will post results in another post next...

Results of 5 Attempts Sat Mar 22 2014

Incomplete - 2 due to bleeding < I thought was too much.. both survived>
Slip's - Two #3 on the Lt #5 the String made the disconnection however the testie disintegrated on the extraction
Completed - One - and unfortunatly the surgurie was a success but the patient expired. ( broken string and other issues taking too long.)
Survived - 4/5

Lessons Learned -

  1. Deeper/longer First Cut Listen for the Air whoosh ... I wasnt getting thru with the cuts i made on 8 week old birds at Cora's.
  2. Have Back up String
  3. Have Bigger table for bigger birds. ( I'm going to try the Ironing board. Wooden and sturdy)
  4. re-Organize Tool trey - Threaded tool got tangled - then tools on the floor..
  5. Membranes are Tough and there are 2 to get to the testes
  6. Use Alcohol to disinfect the work trey. < problem with H2O2 causing bubbling of blood - makes for poor vision in the hole. especially if they jump/ or struggle and tools fall to floor>
  7. For larger birds adjust restraints. I was gifted some 2 1/2" Velcro straps. One of the slips was due to a sudden jerk on extraction. it was disconnected and i was using the grabber end of the scalpel and it busted the teste when he jumped.
  8. Dont drink too much Coffee..
  9. Densely Feathered Birds - Try Plucking and let rest.. Pluck another then do the first.. These White Birds <dono breed> are very thickly Feathered! and inexperience of plucking and how to < like 3 at a time> and getting the right spot plucked for the tissue pull, Caused me probably 30 minutes or more on the #4 that expired on the table.
  10. Forgive my self. For the mistakes i make while Learning.
  11. Get 'em young!

Questions.. to discover..
  1. how to use / tie string so it dosent break.. ( wish i'd remembered that carolina fish hook tie dad taught me.. thanks dad!)
  2. how to mark slips.. so i can watch there progress
-- Thanks so much To Cora and Kassandrua for leading the workshop. To the attendee's and byc members. it really helps to share this with some one w.g.a.d.

test - the Wire was all the way around and it was during sawing that it broke.
Are you saying to hold the string ? that may have wkd better.. but then the tool is hanging down dangeling.
it may be just a better knot..

I didnt know how i was going to get it out of the whole i made.. sorry no photo of that. however on the bird the last one.. i had both spoons in trying to maneuver it.. and the only time a struggle helped.. I had one end pointed out.. and he jerked.. and sent it out..
Darn i should have measured in inches.. will today.

Thanks for the shoulder Kass...
