GRAPHIC PICS of my day learning to caponize

Are your retractors working? Spreading the ribs and keeping them open to the right amount is important. It is hard to find even a commercial one that works well, and I think it is the most important tool. The first retractors we were using were the gelpi's
th
They work better then the ones in the American caponizing kits, but not as well as the Chinese, they are easy and not that expensive on Ebay or Amazon
Hi again sorry to be a pain but I was thinking about this today and it really interest me that you can operate on the chicken while its awake Does anyone know if there is some kind of trigger that does something in the brain to stop then feeling pain like we would? Chickens are such a popular choice for people especially in America you'd think we know a lot more about them than we do That trick people do putting a chickens head under its wing and rocking it, then place it on the ground and it stays asleep I'd love to know more about the physiology and neurology of chickens Can anyone recommend any reading material?

I don't know any reading. We as humans tend to be psyched out by pain, we internalize it and hype it up in our heads, this is something a chicken can't do. There are of course pain nerves in the skin and musculature, but not so many as you would think in the abd cavity.

Yes that's very true
I read once the people who live the longest with cancer are people with Alzheimer's
A chickens lack of experience of pain or knowledge at what is going to happen might be
Why they cope with this?
I love chicken behavior
I had a chick with a deformed legs when it was born, it walk around dragging its bum, kegs bent and couldn't straighten them, after splitting for a week he was fine
But when I go to stroke him and he comes to me he walks as he did with his bad legs, I've just shown my husband its so weird!

I agree this is a pretty specific topic and no one that's commenting should be horrified at it as it's easy to see this is about an almost lost art.

This is in the meat etc section right? Right.

I'd be incredibly interested in another clinic. I have 9 boys in my flock of 26 about 4 weeks old chicks, and I think 2 of my < 2 week old chicks are boys, but I'd feel better with first hand experience and mentors! I put in my order for a double chinese caponizing kit, what else should I get to add onto the order or does everything come with it?

I'm hoping that the slw are just slow to show sex, b/c I'd like more than 9 cockrels to "practice" on.

A good head lamp is really useful.

Kassaundra-
Thanks! I will have my bf order a few. *I lose & break things- it's my nature*

What about scalpels? Rib separators? We're getting velcro tie downs, I have an old drafting table to use for an operating table/restraint anchors. Lots of iso alcohol. Plucking feathers? I'm nervous!

We are waiting for things to settle down for Coral to have another clinic. She babysits and has to work around the school schedule. I have asked her to order me the double set of the kit as I know I will be having to caponize adults. All of my youngsters are getting close to the top end of their "easy to remove" glands period. They are 15 weeks old. I have more, younger coming up but these guys are the ones I'm worried about since they will be challenging fathers.

what happens when you remove a gland and then lose it in the body? does it need to be slaughtered?

Well, I had that happen to one of mine about 8 weeks ago, and he is alive and well. I think he is going to end up being a slip, so he will get butchered earlier than the full capons.
