Poco and I have been talking. Too far to drive and be picked up. So my options are the bus ($50) or the plane ($343). Guess which one I can afford. Poco has invited me to stay with her in her guest room with a new bed I might add. So I'm really going to try to make this work. My daughter rode a bus back in her mid twenties and was frightened. I told her there is a difference in older me and a young chickee. I don't anticipate being hit on.

That could be done, but the bioavailability is very low. Only 5% of it is available,so they would have to eat a lot of it. I can improve it to a little over 10 % if I cook the greens in fat. So, I think I would opt to give them the vitamin K dissolved in their water for a couple of days, if at all.

In an otherwise healthy bird I don't feel the need to have them prematurely clotting. The greens are a good idea as much for the rest of it's nutritional content as the K. If you nick the vena cava it's not going to matter anyway. My position on this stems from my desire to go back 60 years to a time when it was done routinely on the farm -- I hope to be a point of contact for information on caponizing for future practitioners. I'm not opposed to looking for an operational advantage but definitely stop short of pharmaceutical intervention. Not meaning to sound confrontational on this (but seem to be somewhat when reading my own points). Looking forward to folks feedback on what preparations they will do as the spring capon adventures get under way.

I can get Vit K but I wouldn't use it. I want to know if I have one (or more) that are going to bleed excessively. I can understand the concern but I wouldn't go so far as to chemically alter their natural clotting cascade. I think the above suggestion has merit as you are working through the natural processes to help to ensure the birds would/could be as prepared as possible. I would not go "heavy" on the greens but have some available for them along with their normal rations for say the week before the procedure. My $0.02.

I haven't used any Vitamin K as of yet, but if I did, it would be from a plant derived source. Once you get the procedure down, I think the bleeding risk is low....in the younger birds, anyway. I think the older ones that are more sexually mature are at greater risk of bleeding Chickens have some serious ability to clot, though. We humans would be deader than dirt with injuries that chickens routinely survive.

That will be great.......you just can't take your new little capons home on the bus.....lol. Learning from them will put you at tremendous advantage, as well as alleviate anxiety when you begin doing it by yourself.

I personally would have no problems giving a vitamin in the water a few days prior to caponizing. It wouldn't stop a catastrophic bleed, but would mitigate a moderate bleed and probably make recovery times a little better. But the surgery done correctly has very little blood loss, so I can totally see how some might not want to do it at all.

Haskell is covered in a layer of snow, but that's just the fluffy part. Under that is a gleaming sheet of ice. DH took the 4WD to church. I was still defrosting water buckets when he left. Getting up an hour before my usual wakeup time wasn't enough.

more days before our capon clinic. Linda, if you've got time, consider coming out on Saturday and staying until mid week. Your capon chicks will travel better if they have a few days to recuperate. I will be on spring break the 17th - 21st. I'd be happy to show you around NE Oklahoma, and we could venture into the southwest if you want to see an amazing waterfall: Turner Falls in Davis, OK. I'm not sure what the park hours are in March, but we can figure that out if you decide you're interested in seeing it.
