GRAPHIC PICS of my day learning to caponize

As long as people are asking, how about anyone near Branson or Springfield Missouri?

I have to get back to my reading. I think I stopped on page 51. LOL

You could just put good dirt in there; cocci is every where; the idea is for them to get a little exposure when they are young so when they get a little older they will already have some immunity. I also put some creek sand in for grit
Oh, my goodness! Where was this information before it started raining again? LOL We have been dry now for a few days, long enough for them to dig themselves a dust pit and now it's all mud again. LOL I will remember this for the next time it dries up.

Well I suck at caponizing, that's the conclusion i've come to. Killed the 1st 2 (1 of which turned out to be a girl but I wasn't sure so opened her up in case). Did manage to fully caponize the 3rd (a favorite), cut into a 2 mo old turkey poult but he/she had different landmarks and looked different in there and I didn't find anything teste looking (or it's a girl) so I closed him back up. Given my run of bad luck I was too scared to risk the 3 Faverolles boys, they're just too small yet, so I put them back and put 2 others back I think might be girls and called it a morning.

I'm cutting too far back. With the 1st one I hit a vein as soon as I broke the membrane after putting the rib spreaders on. Must have been a major vein, didn't even see it. On the 2nd one the testicle came out in 2 pieces and I hit the vein pulling the 2nd piece out. He died right away so I went ahead and did the 2nd side for practice and that came out perfect. I was pretty freaked out at this point because I had to do my favorite boy "Cheeks" next. A Faverolles/Orloff/Brahma mix who's huge at 6 wks. I slowed down and just did it, thankfully both testicles came out perfectly. It sure helped he was bigger. Tha's why I decided to put the Faverolles boys back for a few wks, they just seemed too tiny yet.
Nerve-wracking. I bought 13 Blue Ameraucanas a few wks ago and *10 of them are boys. Maybe the seller knew how to sex them. So I'm going to try to place them instead of caponizing and either killing them or having slips. I haven't given up yet :-/

Honey, remember, you're gonna lose some. Practice is the only cure. Don't place them. Caponize them. The more you do, the better you'll be at it.

I'm sorry you had such a bad day. Once the day starts south it is really hard to turn it around. As long as you can identify the issue w/ the not successful you can work on how to improve for next time. Sometimes the landmarks are lit up like neon signs, sometimes they are seriously subtle. We have all missed landmarks and cut the wrong spot. My last batch I did it, he was a slip and I ended up processing him a week or so later since he was wayyyyyyy to much boy for his age. You can be a master caponizer, and you won't be successful if there is no teste to remove.

Sympathy on your losses, but congrats on having the courage to go through with the third. I would love to see some pics of him when he is older.

Does anyone else have pics of their successful capons as adults?

Thanks, Linda. You're right of course. Placing them isn't going to give me any practice. The 3 Faverolles cockerels are my favorite, I'm pretty freaked out about losing them. If the slightest thing goes wrong when i do those 3 I'll just pull out and accept slips.
Kass, it's just frustrating that I had better luck on the Barred Rocks I did at the Capon Clinic than I've had since. I've attempted a total of 7 since that day, 3 are slips, 2 are dead, the turkey may be a hen and just 1 is caponized fully. Yikes! He is a favorite though so I thank God he made it out alive.
Tara, he's a few pictures of Capons, although I'm not the one who caponized them, Poco did. The Barred Rocks are the ones i did the day I learned. They're 5 months and not crowing so my fingers are crossed.
The 1st is a Legbar and the last is a Brown Leghorn.

This is my biggest capon from last year. He dressed out at 6 1/2 pounds at a year of age.....he would have been close to that size quite a bit earlier, but a series of things occurred that made me unable to process him earlier. He got a good bit bigger after this photo, but other than growing and his tail feathers getting longer, and droopier. he really didn't change much.
