First a Big Thumbs up for posting this! This is a forum for meat birds, and few meats are sweeter than capon. I couldn't find anyone to teach me, but do have a friend who owns a small processing plant where they do Poussin's. He let me practice on some dead birds prior to processing and this was extremely helpful. I have now caponized 24 live birds with only 2 losses ( I actually expected to lose more and have had to expand their coop & run). I also purchased the same retractor from eBay. At the same time I purchased an antique set which worked incredibly well. I am having the extra prongs on the weitlaner ground off to leave just 1 and 2 "teeth" which I think will work better and help minimize the incision and spread. For me the hardest part of the procedure was working up the nerve, but once I started I found it really wasn't very hard. I also stitched my birds, but am curious if anyone has done this without sutures; which most of the lit say is unnecessary.

. Thanks..... I looked it up and found them right away, just $8.00 + $9.00 shipping. but if they work better I have a better shot at keeping my boys. Your thread is SOOOO helpful thanks again

I do not use sutures, and the birds heal over just fine. One less stressful step for the bird, who is after all the real patient in this. Similarly, I would not consider stressing them with an ice pack as some have suggested. Get in, get out, return bird to feed.

I wonder if tissue adhesive (same thing as super glue) would work also.

My only concern would be if there were an ingredient they couldn't tolerate. The "caines" are toxic to chickens, but I don't know about anything else.

I've used super glue on a chicken to glue back a comb torn by a rival roo, and they seem not to have any reactions to it.
