and an infection could account for the misshapen bill... right?

So this one guy just got an infection and everything went a bit catty-whompus.

Nice to think it wasn't a breeding issue or a genetic issue.

Carportpony, I'll check it out and the baby hatched like this. No I did not slice open the belly. Alaskan, I can gurantee you it is neither one of those .

They can get yolk sac infections while still in the shell. Have a picture of one of mine that died before it pipped. Nasty, infected yolk... Very smelly.

Not sure if an infection could cause a problem with the bill, but maybe? I think sometimes deformities like that can also be caused by the chick being in a bad position. So many things to think about when one sees hatching issues.

So then it's possible that with all the eggs they had (41) that that was one that didn't get turned properly? There was a few bad eggs in the clutch. Do u think the bad bacteria from the bad eggs was transfered to that egg?

The hatching setup was not ideal, and I've seen problems like this in nests of mine, too. We see the best hatches best when one hen sits on a normal sized clutch in a cool, soft, dry, clean spot. For example... have one nest now that two ducks and one 30 pound turkey are trying to cover, and I just checked it... several broken eggs, some are half stuck in the dirt, so they won't get turned at all. Chances of any from this nest hatching are slim to none.
