Grass In Pen

Mike, per our previous conversations on this topic, I had my husband ask the county extention agent what he might recommend as a "cover crop" for the run. He said annual rye would be good, but usually needs planted by the end of Sept to grow well. We all said "good lucK" typically they will either eat the seed or the seedling before it has a chance to grow. I'm still trying to figure out a way!

The area right in front of the coop (assuming this is a fixed, permanent coop?) will get thrashed all to dirt no matter how large the run is. It might be worth doing some preemptive amendment with sand or fine gravel, there, to slow its descent into mud and to make later work on that area more in the nature of 'touch-ups' than 'fixing a giant mud swamp'.

GOod luck, have fun,

Pat

That is very true... I only have 4 birds in one of my coops, and even though everyone gets to free range without fences.... there is a 4x8 or so patch of just dirt in the door way.

I'm going to try a chicken tractor next spring -- can't wait can't wait can't wait -- I'm hoping to avoid the denuded ground problem. I will certainly keep everyone posted (read: brag/lament the results, depending. . . .
