Grass on bottom of run?

I don’t have chickens yet, but I am wondering if I grow real grass on the bottom of the run will the chickens poop fertilize the grass so that I don’t ever have to clean the run?

More likely they’d tear it up and eat it so you’d just have dirt.

It depends how many chickens. We have a breeding/grow out pen that's 10' x 10' and with just 4 silkie chickens, it didn't take long for the grass to be down to nubs. I think this is one reason people make/buy those movable "tractors" or runs so as soon as they're killing the grass in one place, they move it to another.

It would help if you made one end of it dirt so they can dustbathe and not dig holes everywhere else to try make one themselves.

The grass in my original run was gone in a few days; in the addition, less than that.

With a hoop coop or chicken tractor you can move your chickens every day, or as needed. Same with using portable electric fencing. I have both.
