Grass seed safe for free ranging chickens?

Hi,

I'd love to throw some grass seed down on this yucky, muddy, shady area of our yard...I'm worried the hens will eat the seed. Will it hurt them?

No, the seed won't hurt the birds. They will, however, probably eat all the seeds and you won't get any grass. I'd look for a way to keep them off the area until the grass is fairly well rooted, or it will simply be an exercise in futility.

Yup, I would toss grass seed out at night after the chickens were locked up. The next morning when I let them out, they would make a bee-line to the seed. I swear they could smell it - it was like candy to them!

Ha ha! Glad to know it won't hurt them, I'll have to find a way to keep them off that area
