grass vs hay vs nothing!

When I can, I let the hens out to free range. Soon it will be dark too early for me to do that. Can I put some hay in there? I put coastal hay in the boxes and they strewed it all around and I assume ate it! It is mostly gone. Do they need that stuff? Will it hurt them? I have a good T&A hay avail should I share it with the girls? I wondered if it would get caught up in the crop?+

I feed grass and alfalfa hay to all of my chicken all the time. They love it! we ran out of feed a few years back a few days before payday and my girls lived on hay and actually didn't even complain. They loved picking the dead bugs out of it. All the years I've fed mine hay, I've never had any crop issues, just really happy girls!

My birds love it! No problems with feeding hay here either.

Ditto, and when it gets a little yucky that's just a better place to find bugs. We throw hay in the run all the time. Solves lotsa mud issues too.
