Gray,Roan,Dun,Grulla..How do they all color up?

Quote:
Well if both parents were heterozygous for grey then you would expect a 25% chance of a non-grey foal. Nothing at all mysterious about that. It does tell you that both parents *are* heterozygous for grey, which is sometimes useful to know.

This little gal had 2 gray parents. She also has several bay half-sisters out of different mares of various colors. Stallion is heterozygous for gray. In fact, one of her half sisters who is bay was actually registered gray since the owner was determined that this horse would turn gray!

Thanks so much to everyone that replied.I have spent hours on the net looking at these type horses.I guess I really like a horse of a different color.Plus my old mare Trixie changed color so many times during her lifetime and now I have 3 of her offspring and 2 grandsons from them, also.I also learned she had a bloodspot.Always wonder why that spot got darker as she got older. Now I'm pretty sure at least one if not 2 offsprings have them, too. This December 23 rd will be 2 years since we put her down and I am just now getting to the point I can enjoy her memories. But still not without tears.LOL.I'm getting there thanks to folks like you all that let me talk about her. Thanks again.

When I bought my daughters gelding he was a bay, as well. His sire was a grey, bankers grey kid, while his mother, crimson brandy war, was a sorrel. He started to lighten at around 1 year old. He continued to lighten beyond grey to almost white for years. Now that he is going on 10 he is starting to bleed sorrel back through on his shoulders, bloody shoulder its called. Every year he seems to have a little more red than the year before...I wonder if eventually he will be almost all red and back to his birth color, of a bloodyish bay. My sons Qhorse X App, also was born solid , a silver bay. Her sire was a bay qhorse, addiction maker, and her dam was an app, spotted around town. But as she gets older her blanket covers more of her back and gets more defined. I wish I could get a picture that clearly shows their colors.

I did a little reading today and every website I went to, had a somewhat different take on color genetics. I did learn there are multiple overo genes and 'two' new dilution genes that turned out to be 'one' and the same, dilution gene.
