I've found what may be the perfect bowl for supplying quail with supplemental, on-demand oyster shell. The bowls are about 1 1/2" across & 1 1/2" deep. They're marketed for use with parakeets & parrots.
These bowls are made with a holder that fits just dandy in cages with 1/2" wire mesh walls. Then install in seconds and seem to hold securely. When I put one into my quail pen 1/2 filled with powdered oyster shell, the hens were pecking at it within seconds. I'd been having a cracked egg & soft shell egg problem. Calcium supplement seems to be the solution. With these, I won't need to sprinkle oyster powder on their crumble feed.
They're called "Pinvnby 4 pcs Bird Bowls for cage with clamp" on Amazon (under $15 for four)
