You live in IL? Winters would be too cold to leave a dog like a short coated dane outside. I personally don't like leaving my dogs on a perminant ouside basis... they learn better manners if they're raised and live inside with you.

I would love to get a dane some day... but 4 mastiffs are plenty for me right now! I think one of the biggest issues with danes are bloat.

I had a Great Dane who had been a puppy mill dog before getting used up and dropped off at the pound one day. She was a fawn colored one. Her name was Freya. She weighed only 80 lbs when I got her and when she died a year and a half later, her weight was up to 110 lbs but she was still underweight. They eat an incredible amount of food.

Our vet said that Danes are prone to osteosarcomas--what Freya eventually died of--and puppies need supplemental calcium as they are growing as most dog foods don't have enough to feed those growing bones.

I would love to have another one, but they do take up a lot of room and those tails will break anything they come into contact with. They are not as cold-hardy as other breeds. However, Freya was very protective of me without being aggressive toward others. She would always keep herself between me and anyone else.

we got our dane mix Loki from the ARL at 4 months old and he was already the size of our collie mix. He is a great dog. but gets bored easy when not around family. when inside he sleeps alot, when outside runs and runs and then comes in to sleep. we have had issues keeping him in the yard. he learned how to open the gate, then how to climb the fence then go under it. he is very very smart and learns "tricks" fast the good and the bad.
good if you have a towel in hand when you open the door he sits and waits to have his paws wiped.
bad he watched how the gate opened till he figured it out lift latch up, hook paw on side pull in.
but even though he has made me sooo mad we love him.

OP....if you're wanting a mostly outdoor dog, I would highly suggest NOT getting a great dane, or a golden retriever for that matter. Please research characteristics; Both these breeds, as well as several others, are extremely people oriented, meaning they want/need to be around their people a lot. They're leaners and lovers. There are other big dogs out there who are much better suited to being outdoors, with more independent, livestock guard characteristics/mentalities.

Here is our new pup Diesel:
