Great Danes Anyone?

It's interesting that you say to run from "Euro" danes when "Euro" seems to be all the rage on the net. I have looked at a lot of the Euro GD and for me they are ugly but the price reflects that they are the "greatest ever". I found a litter of which the pedigree on the sire was very nice with a lot of titles but the dam was part Euro.

I seriously considered a GD (I'll never forget when over 40 yrs. ago people had a beautiful blue that they brought to their summer home here.) For me a GD must have cropped ears to look correct because floppy ears don't look right to me. When I considered the cost of pup, shipping, and ear trim it became more than I felt I was able to pay.In the past I've worked with Doberman ear trims and that taping etc. doesn't wait on anyone.Holy cow it can be a lot of work.I remember I had show trims on the 2 Dobie girls and at a vet clinic I was informed that the ears would never stand. That vet never got to see those beautiful ear trims when they stood up either. I drove out of town to go to that clinic because they were state of the art. Too bad her mouth wasn't lol.

Well here's what happened.

I'm having a BIG birthday next week so I bought myself one of the best birthday presents ever...a Mastiff puppy.I've had her for 10 days now and she is a mess. She's just a bit too smart for her britches.Today my BFF showed up and she lives in a different state so we don't see each much. I was out back feeding the chickens so I ran around the front gave her a hug and said "I've gotta let my baby out 'cause she will hear us". She said "WHAT DID YOU SAY?" I opened the front door and out ran my little "Niblet" .My BFF went crazy over her. She told me to get rid of my other dogs and just keep Niblet. Oh and did the guy have any more? Are all Mastiffs this wonderful? Well I guess about all Mastiffs are this wonderful since I got my first one in 1990. In that time I have only been without one an unplanned month. That was a very empty time.

I have bred, trained, shown GDs for 35 years. I'd be happy to help you.
Firstly, there are tons of really slick websites out there. I would say if someone advertises Euro, run!
If you know the dog's kennel name (such as mine is Coleridge), you can check at www.offa.org to actually verify if the health tests they claim to have are true.
Well-bred danes, from health-tested ancestors & parents, usually live a much longer & healthier lives. We've had many who lived for 11-14 years. A good breeder will charge more, but in the end you'll save 10x the price in vet bills.
You can see my danes at Bluegreatdane.com

I have a great dane/pit bull cross that I love to pieces. Very sweet and beautiful dogs. Hades is shorter and stockier (but still pretty dang massive) because of the cross, but I'm hoping he'll have less problems because of the mix.

Very interesting mix. Would love to see pictures of him!

that is probably the reason to run away from them. When a certain line or variety becomes popular, everyone starts breeding them, looking for a quick buck. Follow quidelines for finding a responsible breeder - health testing, some type of work with the dogs (obedience or something), stands behind their dogs, etc
