Great Depression of 2016

Rufus, you reminded me of the fallout shelters that people had. We never had one, nor did anyone in our neighborhood. But I remember "duck and cover" atom bomb drills at school in 1st and 2nd grade. We filed out in the hallways, sat down with our little backs against the wall, drew up our knees and put our head down. It seems funny now.

People that had shelters didn't share that with their neighbors. Several years ago when my oldest son was looking to buy a house, we looked at a house that actually still had a shelter in place. He didn't buy it.

I guess people could also use them as tornado shelters if one lived in an area subject to tornados.

People were somewhat naive about atom bombs. I remember that in 1954 we got up on a tin roof to watch a hydrogen bomb go off. The bomb went off in Nevada, but we saw it in Arizona. An orange dot opened up on the horizon and then closed up. It was all a scary mystery to us.

I remember when the first television was brought into the neighborhood. People didn't want it in the area. They thought it was related to the atom bomb. Bit by bit, people realized nothing was going to explode. Then they became curious. The poor fellow that bought the television got tired of people dropping by to see the thing.

He finally pushed it up to a window and let everyone sit on his screened porch and watch it. Luckily, there were only two hours of programing each night.

If hard ecomomic times do come, which we all know they must, those that are prepared are best to keep things quiet. Another thread started here is about are you a "Prepper",,meaning if a catastrophy did occur, are you prepared in any way for it? Many scenerios can happen, such as Hurricanes,,Floods, electrical brown outs, terrorism, you name it,enough kooks are out there to try it. But if noone had money anymore, and paper money was useless, much as it is now,,and no work was able to be found,,you can bet those living in large suburban areas would be the first to exit and move away to areas they would be able to at least try to self sustain themselves and families. I imagine the wild mule deer population would take a huge hit in a hurry here. Those of us that do raise our own meat-eggs and have the place to do so,,,will be a magnet for every type of migrant city dweller that decides to get out of the city.Martial law will probably be in place,as no municipality has the needed manpower to handle catastrophic events at such a large scale here in the Midwest. We are not prone to earthquakes, hurricanes, storm surges, ect,,,tornados are about all.
I'm not too concerned for protecting my homestead, given the fact we own 9 German Shepherds that all are on our premises, but a simple gunshot can change these odds, given someone desperate enough to steal food or animals from you.And if 1 person knows we have a huge stockpile of food and available meat sources,I'm sure they would easily share that information with others if things became too desperate. At what point do you say no to others,in order to sustain yourself and your family?

You need to make up some gimme bags FBC. Chocolate chips, trail bars, slim jims. Not a lot but something. Let's face it, the first wave is going to be more paniced than anything else. You have a much better chance of getting rid of them, one way or another, before the more orginized groups start coming. Second and third waves are going to be the worst and hardest to deal with.

cupman,,entertaining?? how many decades can this country keep adding debt at a rate that is never repayable? Obama has not had a budget to follow, his total debt by the time he ends his second term will be more than all other administrations combined. You read today the US backed down from China by flying into China's newly claimed airspace between China and Korea? You know Obama backed down from Iran? Main reason was both China and Russia threatened immediate retaliation. You know Obama is cringeing the next time Snowden and Putin releases more classified documents of Govt spying? Have you compared what caused the Great Gepression in the '30's and what our non-stoppable uncontrolled debt is each day here? Paper money has no backing,FDIC is a govt created sense of false security. Whens the last time any taxpayer has seen how much gold is really inside Ft Knox? China owns our debt,or a lot of it already. Many scenerios can trigger a global holacost that our generations has never been thru before. You write a NSF check, you still must make that check good,or risk punishment ,,fines,or jail,,,but what does Uncle Sam have to do?? Pass it on to the next generations is how they've dealt with it in the past, but very soon, just as already witnessed in Europe,,someway the debt will have to be covered. And our country cannot cover this debt, plain and simple. When the IOU's are put down to be paid back to China, our Bald Eagle won't be able to poop it out.

this is entertaining. you people really are convinced the apocalypse is coming, aren't you?
Maybe not so convinced as apprehensive. Before the stock market crash in 1929, the country was booming right up and until the bottom fell out. Talk to anyone 85 years or older and they will tell you how bad it was. What Frenchblackcopper has said in the post above about out debt levels gives us cause to worry. If an individual or company behaves like our country's politicians, they quickly go bankrupt and are broke. This is the path we are worried that our country is taking. And who will pay for it all? We will. And our children. And our grandchildren, maybe even our great grandchildren.

The heart of man isn't any different now than it has ever been. Don't believe me? Read some history. For a start, you can just read the Old Testament in the bible. Get a translation you can actually understand and then read it.You will find there were just as many saints and sinners then as there are now. The present day doomsayers are fussing and worrying about things that in all probability will never happen, and if a disaster does happen, you can bet your bottom dollar that it will not be the one they prepared for. There is nothing new in that, either.
i wasnt really talking from a religious stand point. personally tho i have a king james and i DO read it. a lot. but i dig what you mean about nothing new under the sun (eccles. 3) my focus was more the heart of man in todays culture. you go back 50 years and things WAS different. even the media was different. on the uhm, one of the apollo space missions, the one that they made a movie about, on the news they asked for a day of prayer when things went unexpected. nowadays the media uses fear. but since you mentioned the old testament, and history, look what happened when wickedness was rampant...
did you know that no two countries that YOU pick will have the combined homicide rate as the good ole U.S. of A.? go ahead, pick two countries google those countries annual homicide rate and add them. then google usa's annual homicide rate.
and in my life time i have seen the way people interact change. people used to help someone on the side of the road, people used to know their neighbors, now most people either fear or loathe their neighbors. so even tho nothing is new under the sun, todays times are different than just as little as 20 years back. it is this aspect from which i speak. i mean serious, does anyone else miss the days where everyone respected others and certian things didnt happen like a call after a certian time in the afternoon? is it just me? or am i what you call "OLD fashioned"?

You are right things are not as they were years ago. I am old enough to remember the period after the second world war when things were very different. Although people had so much less than they have today there was a generosity and a community spirit that is sadly lacking in today's society. On the street where I grew up in London there were many families who had been 'bombed out' and were forced to crowd into large damp draughty houses, many sharing the inadequate facilities that were unimproved since Victorian times. Every family passed on what clothing they could to families with younger children.

My mum sent us regularly to elderly and invalid people up and down the street with pies she had baked with our meagre post war rations. If anyone had a bit of coal they shared it with others and failing that they brought the elderly into their homes to get warm by the fire, at least for a few hours. Everything but everything useful was salvaged. Shirt collars and cuffs, were 'turned' and worn sheets cut up and sown 'ends to the middle'. Woollen garments were unpicked and re-knitted for children's wear. Adults coats were cut down and remodelled for children.Holes in sauce pans were patched, as were holes in shoes.

It would be untrue to say no one went hungry, but the difference was I think, that everyone went hungry except the children. Sharing was a way of life, just second nature really, and I'm afraid that is what has been lost as we have become economically better of, but spiritually and socially impoverished. If anything good can come out of this recession maybe it will be the return to the community spirit that we knew then.

I wasn't talking from a religious standpoint either. I mentioned the Bible because almost everyone has one. I like the King James but it is not my choice if I am reading simply for comprehension. Society and moral expectations may change, but the heart of man hasn't.
