Great experience with Valley Hatchery!

This has been a rough year for many hatcheries for a number of reasons, so I wanted to share our good experience with Valley Hatchery. I also mentioned our experience with Valley in a reply to another post, but I'll repeat some of it here so it will be easier to find in search and may help others.

I ordered back in February, and the earliest I could get shipment for my preferred breeds was early June. We have a risk of winter weather well into May, so this was fine with me. Our order shipped out exactly as promised on a Monday from a Valley hatchery in Ohio and arrived at our post office here in western North Carolina on Tuesday around noon. All of the chicks arrived in fantastic shape and are still healthy and thriving a week later.

And our French Cuckoo Marans have fuzzy feet! :)

I contacted Valley's customer service a couple of times with questions, and they were extremely helpful every time. When Valley notified me that my chicks had shipped, I didn't receive an actual UPS tracking number but a link to a tracking page on their website. We live in a small, rural area that is accustomed to dealing with chick shipments, so I called Valley to ask for the actual number to give to my postmaster who watches out for the shipment also. The representative was super friendly and glad to share it with me.

Valley couldn't ship one of the breeds that I ordered (quantity of 3), but hatcheries can't always control hatchings. They notified me at the time of shipping and immediately issued a refund. I wasn't charged a surcharge even though this dipped my chick number below the minimum 15. With the extras they sent, I still received 14.

For what it's worth, when I picked up my chicks, someone was also picking up a shipment that had just arrived from McMurray Hatchery. I heard a lot of peeping in her box, so I assume that she also had a good experience. In past years, we've also had good experiences with Mt Healthy (except for the sex-linked roo they accidentally sent me one year lol - but hey it happens).

There's always a risk with shipping chicks, and many on this forum have said that they would never order chicks from a hatchery. However, many more of us don't have any other options for sexed pullets or meat birds. Rural King, Tractor Supply, etc all have their chicks shipped. To get my chicks home as quickly as possible and to provide the best care available upon arrival and beyond, I simply choose to have them shipped directly to me.

We have meat birds arriving from Valley next month, so I hope and pray that we have just as much success with those. I'll try to remember to reply to this post in regards to that shipment, as well.

Nice! So glad they got to you safely. I've had some bad luck as far as shipping and receiving chicks goes.

I'm glad to see this. I have chicks coming from Valley in a few days. I worry about my post office though as they seem quite inept. My actual mail carrier is great, it's just everyone else seems to not have a clue. Just hoping all my chicks are very hardy. 🙏🙏

Go by your post office or call to talk with the postmaster. Let him/her know that you have chicks coming, and give your info with phone number. The minute they ship, get tracking from Valley and then give it to the postmaster. Often they're willing to help keep an eye out for you.

Unfortunately there are lethal genes that can cause baby chicks to die the first week after hatching. Not all deaths are caused by poor shipping. It pays to research the breeds you like before making your final selection.

Just another update about Valley -

My French Cuckoo Marans that Valley shipped back in June started feathering in... and they're solid black. :lau

I've posted about this elsewhere on the forum, but I contacted Valley and emailed photos. They replied and said that they accidentally shipped French Black Marans, which is a breed/variety that I don't really know anything about or have a lot of interest in. I already keep Black Aussies as my staple layer breed, and I want a variety of feather colors. (Less boring, makes it easier to keep a head count, etc)

The customer rep that I spoke to was somewhat shocked about the mix-up, so it seemed to me that this isn't something that regularly or ever (at least until now) happens at Valley. Valley did issue full credit for the price of the chicks. I gave one away, but I'm waiting to see if I have any roos and what these little girls (hopefully) are like before I decide what to do.

(I'm also somewhat suspicious that one of my EEs is a roo, but that remains to be seen. Valley did provide an extra of each breed, just in case.)

In a separate order from Valley that arrived this week, my neighbor and I took advantage of their bulk free ship Cornish Cross birds. They shipped late Tuesday, this time from Tennessee, and arrived at our local post office in western NC about noon on Wednesday.

We ordered 30, but Valley accidentally shipped only 29 (oops) with no extras. One arrived DOA so we have a total of 28, or 14 each. Thankfully, all appear to be Cornish Cross lol.

I filled out the online claim form, and Valley immediately offered a choice of refund or account credit to cover the MIA and loss. Several days later, all 28 are doing just fine. One of mine does appear to have a yolk sac still attached (I think) which should be okay, but I'll have to keep an eye on it.

Even though they've made a few mistakes with my orders this year, overall I'm extremely please with the chicks that I've received from Valley and their customer service. All seem really healthy and are doing well, and the feathered toes on the Marans are cute. I'm taking the mistakes with a bit of grace because these things happen. Humans are only... human.

Of course, I really wish I had gotten the Cuckoo Marans that I ordered. That was quite a disappointment because I've wanted that breed for a long time, but I took the store credit because I plan to order from Valley again. If you live near me and have always wanted a French Black Maran... :D

You have a wonderful attitude! We should all strive to be this humble. Maybe sell half and just reorder the ones you want?

Using bright colored Leg bands on the Marans should help you do the count. Having all the same color makes them hard to name
I don't usually name mine, but every once in a while a lady earns a nickname haha! It will be fun to see their personalities emerge.

The black marans have feathered feet which is helpful, but when they come in from the field etc, I'm accustomed to doing a fast flock count by heads. Taking the time to look at legs or feet is a lot harder, but I've just started visually grouping all the black ones together. The only issue is that they're all so dark, at this age they can easily hide under and behind each other. Thankfully they'll not be able to do that as easily when they're grown.

Thanks for the legband reminder though! I've been out for a while and need to order new ones. Appreciate the tip and the very kind words! I'll likely just keep them all, at least until I bring in new chicks next year. They're beautiful birds!
