Make sure you feel his breast plate and make sure he isn't emanciated in any way. I like to release them on a full tummy so they don't get as hungry while trying to figure out where the prey is in their new location.
If he is bony feeling to you - I would feed him a couple chickens before releasing him. Feed him all he will eat......

I don't think I would sacrifice my roosters to give to an owl. Being eaten alive wouldn't be the way to go.
That will save the rooster...... he'll just take a finger or two.

He is pretty angry, although he doesn't puff his feathers out anymore when he sees me... but that hissing is enough of a warning
