Great Idea for Toddler Dresses (PIX)

My friend Jennifer stopped by with some goat milk in exchange for some eggs this morning, bringing her niece Elizabeth along. And the dress Elizabeth was wearing was just too cute.

It can fit her for a very long time, due to the neckline, waist, and sleeves all being adjustable.

About any little girl dress pattern could be made this way. Jennifer thought it was a McCall's pattern. That was improvised to use ribbon where elastic would have gone.
I found a pattern on line that looked to be much like the style of this dress, McCalls Pattern #4547

I now wish I had taken a closer look at the back to see how it was put together. I have a call into Jennifer for her to explain it to me.

Here are some photos of the dress. ELizabeth is not quite 2 1/2, She is such a sweet little girl. And sooooooo polite! "May I Please..." and "Thank you" come without any prompting. Her very presence is a joy to behold! (And yes, it comes with LOTS consistant hard work.)

The skirt has three tucks so it can be let down as she gets taller.

It looks to be a very versatile pattern. Easy to dress up or down depending on what fabrics you care to use. I had never seen this before. And thought maybe I am not the only one that hasn't seen it.

It looks pretty simple to make. The hardest part would be putting in the waist and the lace. Maybe put some of that lace around the waist or around the bottom as an accent?

The Pattern # is

McCalls Pattern #4547

Alll you have to do.. is not do buttons in the back, but rather, in the neck, waist and sleevesl using the facing where you would normally put elastic, use a drawstring, you can put button holes to bring out the ribbons. Or just poke a hole in the fabric, which my friend did on one of the dresses, and it has not gotten any bigger over time, but she doesn't put the dresses in the dryer, she line dries them.

There is enough overlap in the bodice once tied together that it doesn't come open. Openings for the ribbons have to line up to make the overlap lie correctly. Next time I have a chance I will take a photo of how the closing ribbons work.

Today Jennifer and her niece, Elizabeth , came over with two dresses for me to photograph. We have a wedding this Sunday in the Congregation, so... I may not get to write up the directions and size the photos until this coming week. But, I have not forgotten. And I will get the "tutorial" posted. I did get some nice photos of the construction of the dresses.

The young ladies came today dressed alike. Jennifer is a great seamstress. She makes Civil War costumes to participate in re-enactments of that time period. She is 21, I have known the family since she was 8 years old. She will make a fine wife for some lucky fellow. She teaches piano and violin. Raises goats for milk and meat. She is a terrific baker and cook. Make quilts and is a generous, kind young lady.

Here is Miss Elizabeth standing on the table, Spartacus is not sure that is a good idea!
