Hey guys! Just wanted to share an update! I made a few phone calls to my county regarding ordinances, zoning, ect. I got the answers I wanted and its perfectly legal for me to have backyard hens for "personal use." My kids are so excited!!!
I have a few questions... I want the chickens to be young enough for my kids to really enjoy and appreciate taking care of them and for the hens to be friendly and not afraid of them. Should I get them at 6 weeks/pullets, or get them as chicks at tractor supply? I'm concerned about running the risk of getting a rooster as I'm not allowed a rooster in my area due to the obvious noise. I only want about 4 hens.
I had RIR and Plymouth barred rocks when I was a kid. Are there other breeds that are known for being calm/friendly?
Thanks in advance for the advise! :)

Chicks are always fun. You can buy sexed chicks but even then there could be a slight chance of a little roo sneaking in the bunch. If you get them a little older at least then you can see more signs of roo or hen. I always had Orpingtons that were very friendly and they all seemed to calm down with treats :) Good luck with whatever you decide.
