Great Pyreenee dog guard or an alternative breed ? ?

Your bull terriers are gorgeous!!

As for the great pyr. their coats act as insulation against the elements. This does mean that in hot climets, their coats have to be taken care of. Brushed out thoroughly (by a professional groomer is best) at least every 4 wks. The guard hairs will keep the dog cool in the heat. The under coat will roast 'em.

Good luck on your search.

We have a Sarplaninac (shar-pluh-nee-natz) LGD for our goats, and the folks we got him from also have chickens. They said that if their chickens got upset and started making noise over the presence of hawks, the dogs would run around and bark at the sky until the hawks gave up and the chickens calmed down. We just got chicks a couple weeks ago, so we're hopeful that big Ivan will be good and keep them safe when they go out.

He is, however, a gigantic fluffy dog....about 150lbs, probably 50lbs of which seems to be fur.

Not well suited to Florida's climate. Not entirely suited to Kentucky's capricious climate either, but it does get well below zero here sometimes, so...

Someone suggested an Anatolian right off the bat, and I think that would be an excellent choice. Anatolians are from Turkey...gets pretty hot in Turkey! They also use them in Africa to protect goats from cheetahs...no kidding. The occasional fox or raccoon wouldn't stand a chance. Plus, the Anatolians I've been around seem to be a lot like the Sarplaninac in terms of being more dog-like than "bonded" dogs...which seem to believe they're goats, or chickens, or whatever they've been bonded to.

Anatolians are big, though!

Now that I think of it, someone should come up with banty LGDs......

I'm CM, by the way. I've been lurking for a while, but I think this is my first post.

The best dogs that can also stand the heat are a rare breed called Akbash. They are a Turkish Sheepdog that was bred for protection of flocks and livestock. I have 2 and they are wonderful pets and guard and protective dogs. If you have any questions about them you can email me.

PS they have 2 types either long hair or short hair
