I have been told/warned on another forum to back out of the GP, as my 6 acres of fenced pasture is way too small for the breed and it will wander.

The more I read about GPs, the more I worry.

I really cannot deal with the stress of a dog that will jump my fence and take off and do god knows what.

how tall is your fence? 6 acres is way more than plenty

it's your average height of a livestock/ranch fence - it's for cows and goats, woven wire with a low down hotwire (and perhaps someday an electric one up top as well)

I just read that they can roam 10 *miles*

we have 55 acres broken up into two-four acre pastures, two are woven sheep/goat fence with 4x4" holes and shes never attempted to jump it

I don't have personal experience with LGDs but I will answer with things I have heard about them

Can we get it back on track with some questions about GPs?

I have a deposit on one, from a reputable breeder here in the Appalachians - from working lines and the pup will be started on Chickens, Goats, Cows and Horses. We will only be working her on Chickens, Cows and Goats.

BUT I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS before I get her. I know the breeder can help me, too. But I like to be prepared.

Firstly, some background information; I have experience training a border collie that I got from a rescue with zero training - but it was a BC so she was so easy, even though when I got her she didn't even have recall.

I also trained a pomeranian, but she was so small and good, teaching sit and coming to her name and leave it were all she ever needed. <3

But I hear GPs and LGD's in general don't train like any other dogs and you know what? I can't get anyone to tell me HOW to start a dog. Videos are vague. People won't respond to questions with actual answers. I'm beginning to think people are full of shite. LOL

Have you tried asking in backyard herds? It's the livestock version of BYC

So - in preparation for getting my pup in September - she will be 16 weeks old -- what can I do?

HOW do I teach her the boundaries of my property? I've heard you have to do that, but no one has answered my questions of how.

How do you introduce animals? I've heard you have to do that, but no one says how.

Everyone says "don't leave them alone with livestock until 1" but our dog isn't a pet, she won't be coming in the house. Do I pen her? Fence her off? I've never had to do that to a dog before, so I need specifics.

Any advice is helpful, thank you in advance!

I think this depends a lot on your predators. The more predators you have and the larger they are, the larger the puppy will need to be before its safe for it to live outside. Even though they aren't pets, most people keep them indoors until they are a good size, where they won't just get eaten by the predators. Then they will pen them outdoors

Getting them used to being indoors isn't a bad thing either. It depends on your setup, some people will bring them indoors if they get sick, hurt or are in season

Definitely ask your breeder about fencing and escaping! I have heard many, many stories of them getting out and roaming


I can't help with the basic training because I very highly recommend working on being able to use treats

I think 6 acres is plenty, yes they can roam more but six isn't too small or anything

that is my pyrenees cross newfoundlands favouite position (he is a pet)
i call him a human dog
(meg the labrador saying why do i have to sleep with him, i want to sleep with you)(she normally sleeps in my bed room but this night she was sleeping down stairs and she was not pleased)

his name is dennis and he is 7 years old
he suffers from arthrites and if he runs to much he limps
he is such a sweet heart, he loves people but if anyone in our family is upset he gets really protective
having a good scratch
