for trying to rescue. Even though it didnt work out, you had the right heart.

So what IS a good dog to guard chickens and NIgerian Dwarf goats? My Jack Russell fails but never expected him to guard-but thinking for the future to get a different breed that might do better about guarding our livestock!

The GP is good for livestock, especially goats. Ours stays with the goats, but tolerates the chickens. He used to be terrible when it came to the chickens. Do an online search for livestock guardians and you will find a variety of breeds that are good.

yes, do the ball test. And the chicken test, take a young pullet and show it to the pups. If you see one smell it, lick her gently and then walk away, grab him and run away with it LOL. Also, if you can meet the litter, pick the one seems more reserved and laid back. The ones that don't play that much but are watching from a distance (no shyness or submissive) The aloofness is a good sign of independence which is crucial, especially if he will be raised as an only dog in the flock. The breeder can usually help you since he has seen them interact and should have a pretty good idea of their personalities so far.

Thank you all for the great info, I can't wait to find a gp puppy near me I may have to wait till spring but getting that this great info gives me something to work with!!
