I just wanted to pass along a really good product to use on superficial (and not so superficial) wounds and injuries on chickens (and horses, goats, etc). It is called "Aluspray". It's in a spray can so it's easy to apply. It's a silver color that the chickens don't seem to want to peck at after it's applied. It is antibacterial and is great for drying out weepy wounds and sores. I first used it on a chicken that was severely pecked, to the point that her entire back looked like hamburger (it was awful). I cleaned it gently and applied the Aluspray and it formed a protective layer so that she could heal (which she did, completely, and even grew new feathers after a few months). I think it must taste bad too because neither she nor the other hens messed with it afterwards. Yet it's non-toxic. A little can is about $20 and will last for years. You can get it on Amazon or most feed and tack stores. I also used it on a hen that got a really gross back end (we're talking total butt soft tissue necrosis and maggots here) after she decided to brood out in the pasture on a clutch of rotten eggs in the rain for a week. By the time I found her I thought I would have to wring her neck, it was so absolutely foul, BUT a little tissue debridement and the faithful Aluspray every other day and she was as good as new 3-4 months later.

It's like the best kept secret for wound treatment! Also keeps the flies away so you don't have to deal with a maggot-tastrophe while the wounds are healing. Is there anything more gross than maggots????
