Greek chicken breeds

Are there any Greek chicken breeds? I know white-egg layers are Mediterranean and got to wondering if any breed comes from Greece. Anyone know?

I don't know if there are any from Greece, but Greece is in the Mediterranean. I imagine that if there are Greek breeds they would be considered Mediterranean.

You can look on Feathersite.com. They may have something there.

Hi from Greece !'ve read several times your comments but i was too lazy to answer

so there are many breeds-types of chickens here in Greece most of them extinct ! I have managed to save three different types of them ; very beaudiful birds they are large in boby type 3-4.5 kg hooded and muffed speckled and mille fleur in colour.
They very healthy birds ,prolofic and 95% of the hens go broody several times a year ! I have also some more common birds not so baudiful but possessing the same qualities !
It is very rare to find purebred chickens nowadays ! The birds mentioned above are very different from the rest of the wll-know Mediterranian birds !

Hi ,after I joined BYC,and since I started to understand a few things about breeds thanks to BYC,I also start to search info about the chicken breeds of my country.
So far googling didn't help me much ,we don't have any poultry association to get info ,only 2-3 links in greek mentioning them,also a lot of the breeds have been lost or mixed thanks to massive import of hybrids specially after 70s-80s ,there are only a few breeders which have managed to keep pure birds and only the last years a few individuals try to preserve and spread local animal and plants.
Even the country is small ,measuring just the land ,due to big history ,diversity of the environment , and the isolation of specific areas (islands,mountain villages) there were a lot of breeds at the past ,breeds which had been adapt to the Greek environment,breeds medium sized mostly,and some of them with high egg production comparing to food consumption like other Mediterranean breeds.
Personally I am very disappointed with the loss of these breeds , specially if you consider that some of them existed for hundreds years or more.
Anyway here are two links ,with photos, that may help link1 (after page 35) , link2 (greek) I can verify that the first 5 pics of the black bearded chickens are from a Greek Chicken breed called Boufoi (or Boufunes ) of Thrace.

P.S. If there is any Greeks watching this topic and have any of the local breeds send an e-mail to [email protected] , I am willing to help at the preservation of our chicken breeds, by replacing my flock with a local chicken breed.
