Green Club

Well, it's late; I'm so tired my eyeballs feel like they're bumping together. I need some sleep, and I doubt I'll be dreaming of massacres. G'night, all!

Good night Bunny, sleep well. I was really good to hear from you.

Breathing a little easier today. Hubby and I are growing a few hundred Poinsettias in the greenhouse, something we've done for a number of years now. Some years they turn out well, others, not so well, some years have been total losses. The plants were looking really good this year, we had a few white flies on them, so Hubby decided to spray them with some Neem oil. We don't know if there was herbicide residue in the sprayer or what, but some of the plants showed significant damage.

It was beginning to look like we'd managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory yet again.

Today, though, when I was out there watering, I looked hard at the damaged plants. We have cut off the worst leaves, and there are enough new leaves coming on to support some decent flowers. Any day now they will start to show the first traces of color, and it looks like even the ones that were damaged may wind up at least sell-able, if not quite as handsome as we had hoped.

I love poinsettias! However, I don't want to think about them yet either. We went to Walmart the other day and Mini put her hands on her hips and said "Look at that!" I looked around but didn't see anything alarming so I asked her look at what? She pointed to the Garden center and said "It's not even Halloween yet and they have Christmas stuff out! I'm gonna be sick of Christmas before it gets here!"

I told her she had been listening to her Grandma and Grandpa too much. But she's right. When I was a kid, many, many, many, many..(you get the idea) years ago, Christmas things were put up in stores the day after Thanksgiving. I loved it. I was excited to go in the store after Thanksgiving and see everything. Now it's like Halloween and Thanksgiving don't exist. Pretty soon, they will be putting the Christmas stuff out in May.

Bunny, I hope your crop does great! Will you post a pic of one of your plants? I'd love to see it. But maybe after Thanksgiving?

EXACTLY! I want time to think about turning leaves, football, sedge brush, black cats, spider webs (scary ones and beautiful dew covered ones in the garden,) cool weather crops, pumpkins and pumpkin pie, roasted turkey, sage dressing, and THEN shopping, and poinsettias, and all the stuff in the attic that has to be hauled down.

Doodle, are you sure at least some of the Christmas stuff wasn't out earlier than that? The reason I ask, is that I'm remembering a Peanuts special (It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown, which first aired in 1974). There's a sight gag with a banner declaring that there are only a certain number of shopping days until Christmas. Obviously, Charles Schulz was feeling a bit jaded about the rush to the Christmas (selling) season way back then!

But, when you're a grower, you have to think about these things completely "out of season". We have to order the cuttings in the Spring. I'm like, "I feel like I just got rid of the silly things, and I need to make choices about them again already?"

I'll post some pictures, but I promise I'll wait until after Thanksgiving. There's a rolling bench that Hubby built in the middle of the house - he's pretty proud of it, so I'll have to include at least one pic of it.

I was looking at the pics from a couple of years ago and thought, "Deerman would have loved it. All that RED - he'd have nailed me for that, for sure!"

What's really going to be fun (not) is we have to get a new cover on the house while it's full. We had hoped to get another year out of the one that is on there, but it just wasn't happening. So, we ordered an new one (greenhouse film ain't 'zactly cheap) and it arrived a couple of weeks ago. There's a little damage due to a careless shipper,

but we should be able to work around that. Somehow, we are going to get the old cover off and this new one on without damaging either the plastic or the plants.
