Green Roof chicken coops?

I watch P. Allen Smith especially when there's chickens on his show or his Farm raised show on youtube. He has done a couple of shows from the city where the folks there show their roof top gardens. If you get a chance to see them its neat. I also seen in Grit and Mother earth news, where they just take the plastic pans (like 1' by 1'and a half) that the starter packs come in and place them on top of their sheds or chicken coops. They just said that don't put it where the sun is harsh and water frequent due to drainage. It was for sprouts, starting plants, and just a way to cool your rooftop.

i will have to look for that on youtube, it sounds way cool! while i do live on a farm, my personal outdoor space is pretty limited, so i am aiming to turn my "patio" into a sanctuary for me, my chickens and my flowers!

well ive kicked my construction into high gear, at the chance of adopting a few more hens soon, so ive had to abandon any ideas of getting too creative just yet. the main reason i had considered the "green roof" thing was just to keep it cooler inside the coop. and the rain barrel idea was kind of a last minute decision, that will also be put on hold - unfortunately.

part of the run that we're building will be covered so it will still make a great place to put my started seedlings. i guess my veggie garden will have to wait until next year but on the bright side that gives me more time to plan for a pretty sweet raised bed! yay!

I did a posting of a green roof for my chickens and posted pics and details in the Coops section.

If you do a search for "Green Roofed Chicken Pen", you should get to see the photos and information. I do not know how to link it so that it would appear here.

I have yet to find the time to start the second one, but it might come along in the coming months.

Good Luck with the project!

I'm considering this idea, as well as an attached greenhouse, but am having difficulty determining how high the roof would have to be to keep the chickens off of it. Any ideas? Anybody had success building a coop with a greenhouse type structure attached or even within the coop?
