Really, I'm an American living in Germany.
I was raised on a large farm in NW Ohio and we had chickens, normally between 75 to 100 of them. Once we bought a neighboring farmers chickens and there were over 300 birds that week. Most of them we sold off and well, we ate a lot of chicken for a few months.
Now, after retiring from the US Army, I find myself residing here in Bavaria, Germany with my wife and three children. The kids (16, 12 and 6) were joking about raising chickens like the priest from our church. I said, "why not?" and my wife rolled her eyes and stated that her grandmother had chickens in the backyard.
And believe it or not, this site appeared at the top of my Google search. So here I am researching, before we do something this wild!
