Welcome to BYC and I'm sorry for your loss.
I suspect your hen might have "dry" fowl pox. It's a viral disease and is mainly due to infected mosquitos. I recommend applying iodine to the scabs and they will eventually dry up and disappear, avoid the eyes when using iodine. You do not want other birds picking/pecking the scabs. There's the chance that a bird can get "wet" fowl pox inside the mouth and esophagus, then the bird will have to be culled.
