Greetings and Salutations

I am sure there are many safer ways to keep my chickens, but as a whole, the majority of my flock are free range on our 5 acres and we are surrounded by 40 acres or more of pastureland that a neighbor runs cows on. I could keep the girls all penned up, but I like them for bug control, so free ranging, I realize they run a risk at all times. Lost a guinea this week to a dog, I assume. The guineas decided to roam beyond their normal close boundaries to the back pasture.

I take measures for safety where I can. I let them out only on days that I am home 80% of the time. I lock them up in a nearly predator proof coop at night. I walk outside often. All my younger chickens are in pens/mini coops near the house. We have huge back windows and they stick close by. I probably will build some pens for mating pairs and not let them free range, like my coral blue guineas. But we have our house on market and I am trying to not put tons on money into permanent things.

Thank you for the kind words one and all. Such a lovely community.
