Another newbie to the flock. I am in Glendale, AZ and I just bought my first hens on 4/6/14. I would love to tell you what breeds they are, but sadly the store I bought them from couldn't seem to agree. As they get older I will post some pics and maybe all of you can help in that regard.
My chicks are about 2 weeks old and I am in the process of building their coop. I have spent months researching, and this site was far and away the best single resource for all fowl knowledge.
I started an organic garden about 1 1/2 years ago, and the progression and success of my garden inspired me to take the next step. I have large compost bins that make up more than half of all of my soil, so being able to process that material and feed chickens at the same time was only logical.
I am looking forward to adding organic eggs to my organic vegetables and fruit, as we are also adding 3 new fruit trees in the yard as well.
Thanks to all of you, both in advance for all you have helped me learn so far, and for all I know I will learn from you going forward.
Here's the kids on their first day home in the brooder box.
Getting acquainted with our guard dog.
Enjoying play time in the yard.
