Its been a long time since I participated in a forum. Your patience is appreciated during my learning. I have recently acquired a good many acres and 10 chickens. I had 6 males and 5 females but I ate one of the roosters because he was obnoxious.

This is my first attempt at chicken farming so please bear with me

Hello and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. Don't worry, we were all new to the hobby at one time or another and it seems you have the hang of things already by eating your obnoxious roo :)

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/category/learning-center.11/ and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

Thank you!
Excellent advice. I appreciate the idea and I'll get right on that as soon as I figure out navigation. I suspect this site is best accessed by laptop rather than mobile device.

It's certainly easier, but the functions are identical

Using your phone in landscape helps (a little)

A rooster can handle 10 hens, if you have 5 roosters now and only 5 hens, they are going to be over bred to the point of damage or death. Maybe you can invite the neighbors over for rooster barbeque.

Welcome to the community! You came to the right place to learn more about raising your flock. :)

I would agree with @drumstick diva regarding the rooster to hen ratio. Adding more hens (if you have the space) or scaling down the number of roosters would be a good idea.

I intend to thin the roosters, I swear. It's just that they keep fresher in the yard instead of the freezer. I'm picking my next victim Friday. Most of my flock are only 4 months old so I didn't see much danger of over breeding but now that they're of decent eating size I'm putting rooster on the weekly menu
