Here's a picture of the coop I just built to house our 20 chickens.

We have 5 Buff Orps, 5 RIRs; 5 Barred Rocks; two Balck Australops (I think); 2 Ameracaunas; and 1 unkown "bonus bird". (It's in the next picture, if you know what it is....help)

We, wife and I are from MN and I am recently retired from the Marines. I've never raised chickens before and we are enjoying it.

Thanks for looking.

Welcome to BYC! You have a very nice coop and run. I'm glad to see that you used hardware cloth on your run instead of chicken wire as there are just too many predators that can either tear through chicken wire or pass through the openings in the mesh (even 1"). Although they are quite distant in your photo, you do indeed appear to have two Black Australorps (great chickens; very hardy and gentle, and excellent layers of large, brown eggs). Your two Ameraucanas are actually Easter Eggers (the greenish legs are a dead giveaway). Easter Eggers are produced by crossing either true Araucanas or true Ameraucanas (which both lay blue eggs) with other breeds to produce eggs in various colors. Various hatcheries often market EEs under the name Ameraucana (frequently misspelled Americana or Americauna) when they are in fact Easter Eggers. It's difficult to see your unknown "bonus bird" through the hardward cloth, but it appears to have feathered legs and be white trimmed with black neck and tail feathers. If I am seeing correctly, it appears to be a Light Brahma. Good luck with your flock.

Thank you for the feedback. Looking up the Light Brahma, it looks like you could very well be correct, so we appreciate that tidbit of info! We thought our Australorps were Silver Laced Wyandottes as chicks, but soon determined that to be incorrect as their coloring and patterns didn't match up as they grew. We picked them up at local feed store, they were a couple of leftovers and were only a couple days old. Anyway, we had to wait a bit for them to get their full feathers in to make an educated guess. Glad we were able to figure out at least one of our two mysteries.

Thanks again.
