Hello! I just wanted to introduce my self to this forum. I am Kena from Fairbanks, Alaska.
I currently have 2 African Geese and 2 Cayuga's. All thanks to my new job at a local feed store that sells chicks during spring/summer...yay. I didn't plan on coming home with 4 birds my first day but that's what happened all thanks to my husband. He's had geese before and wanted some again. So I came home with these two geese, Itchy and Scratchy, and two ducks, Hughie and Louie. They have been fun.
I have never had poultry before now, I'm a dog person. I always wanted to have some one day. I must say...I'm HOOKED! These guys are so much fun! We live in town and I thought that would be a problem but it's really not. I got them late in the season so they are only about 4 mo. I think next year I will definitely be getting them at the start of ordering season! It's been fun having them. When they are out people always want to stop and say hi. They run the other way, but people don't care they still think they are cool.
I do have a question. I keep hearing people say how their birds are affectionate. Mine seem to like being left alone. Should I have handled them when they were smaller? Kind of like socialization for dogs? Like I said this is my first time having birds so it's a bit of trial and error. Hopefully next year will be better.
Thanks!

Kena

Thank you! I always see the girls at work look some stuff up on this forum so I figured what the hell, I'll join!

:welcome ! As far as them taming down, they need to get use to you being around outside with them. Weather is watering plants, gardening, w/e it may be. Then you can move in with the treats and they'll be all over you. :)

! Great to have you with us! Best wishes to you and your ducks and geese!!

Hi and :welcome

Chickens do get used to people eventually, especially if you're round them more. It does help a little if you play with them when they're young, but it's never too late to start! Our neighbours buy their hens as 4/5 month olds and they still become quite affectionate.

Treats are the best way to win them over.
Duck down and hold the food in your hand, they'll get the hang of it eventually. Nowadays my chickens come running when they see me bend down even if I don't have any food.

Good luck, and yes raising chickens in town is a lot of fun! :highfive:
