Yakisugi Coop
Songster
Greetings chicken enthusiasts.
I've been lurking on this website on and off for the past year so I thought it was high time I introduce myself. I live in northern Colorado and am a chicken mom to three Ameraucanas.
We adopted them last March when our friends moved to Australia and the chickens needed a home. Previous to that, we'd bought eggs from local friends who have backyard chickens--and, as a newbie chicken owner, I mostly thought the benefits of chickens as pets would be the eggs. But I quickly discovered they're smart creatures with individually unique, wonderful personalities. I now see the eggs as a side benefit and their company as the main reason I like having them around.
We didn't love the coop our friends gave us so we ended up building a new coop last summer. Before building it, I spent many hours researching threads on this website, trying to design the perfect coop for our chickens. It ended up being a much bigger project than we anticipated, but we're ultimately happy with how it turned out. I plan to post a separate description of our coop when I find the time to write something up.
