Hello All,

My wife and I are recent additions to the BYC group. I am an engineer and designed and built our coop. My wife is a biologist working at a college. She annually conducts an embryology lab for students to study the development of an egg from fertilization to hatching. We built the coop in our back yard since her campus forbids animals in the lab. Once hatched, they must be removed. They live in our home in a cage until they feather out. Then, they reside in the coop.

We've been lurking on the forum for some time but have come into a legal issue with our flock, the story of which can be found here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...mal-zoning-regulations.1209811/#post-19236250. Hence why I made the account.

Our family lives in central CT, suburbia. We have raised BO and Barred Rocks. We currently have 5 hens (mutt breed Easter-eggers as well as pure bred). Our rooster "flew the coop" when the town came crying.

My wife spends a lot of her time raising our children as a busy mom (I help too.. but she's the hero). I work on the house (antique home circa 1760), the yard, repair small engines and tend to "her" chickens. We have 3 children and one cat.

Thank you for all the information on this site.

Greeting! Welcome to BYC! I myself am in eastern CT in the middle of nowhere and luckily our town doesnt care about whether you have any animals or not. If you cannot find anywhere in your towns zoning regs. Whether poultry is allowed or not I’d go into the town hall and ask. If you have a rooster and are near your neighbors I’d recommend having a discussion with them about free ranging if you do or plan on doing that, otherwise I’d play it safe and just make sure you have a secure and large run for them.

EDIT: I just read your other thread where you explain the situation. Being that you have a permit, got rid of the rooster, and had the 5 hens before the regulations changed I’d ask the town if the new regulations apply to you or not. I hope they’d have the decency to allow you to keep your five hens, but unfortunately if they say you have to get rid of three there isn’t much you can do...
