Still moving into a new house (rental) in what to my wife and I is Country...closest medium size town is 12 miles away called Hillsboro TX. We are now moving into Whitney TX.
My brush with chickens at age 12yrs. and no experience since that time, but really loved being with the animals and made a pet of a Rhoad Island Rooster, but had to loose him to culling even had the job to butcher (cried all the time) and couldn't find myself to eat the pet...though I like chicken meat it was not the same. Don't plan to cull my future birds and must decide how to manage their aging when the time comes. Have rented a home in Whitney and the land lady has given me an open hand to say we can raise chickens and convert parts of property for their use...she being grown up on a farm/ranch environment has some chickens willing to let me care for to start a flock and become acquainted to poultry farming. Plan to raise a clutch of baby chicks when I can find the fertilized eggs Rhoad Island Red, and Golden Comet to start. Will raise till they are pullets then select No more than 6 to learn with, and plan to raise baby chickens up to pullets while keeping my 6 egg layers to learn the in's n out's of poultry farming. My interest or hobbies are Science (general), model construction, photography and art.
I plan to assist in teaching art as volunteer for veterans, and being a veteran myself I want to help those who have disabilities to rehab hand eye coordination.
