Actually I am an E. Tennessee girl transplanted in S.E. Indiana. A few years ago husband and I raised a small flock of hens at our home in the city limits. We loved the ladies and had a ball with them in our backyard. The neighbors and rest of the small town of Oldenburg Indiana (less than 500 people) thought we were rather odd--but most enjoyed the sweet sounds our happy girls provided. Now we are in the process of building our forever home in the country--with a new flock! Started out with 18 babies...3 of each: Aracauna, Barred Rocks, Buffs, Golden Comets, Rhode Island Reds and Bantams. We also have 2 handsome adult sons, a 16 year old Lewellyn setter, and 2 very spoiled beagles. Since we are new to "farming" (and i'm a part time student at the ripe old age of 52) we are starting small. Would like to add a couple of little goats to eat the briars (eventually). For now, getting the girls safely housed is a priority. We are in the process of completing the coop (actually large enough for the mother n law!) needing only a door, windows and the roof. We have been putting the girls in a large solid dog kennel at night that only has a couple of small wire windows at the top of each side and a wire mesh door. A couple of nights ago something with small legs and paws reached in and tore the leg off one of my babies (a banty). GGGRRRR! She is still hopping around though, won't let us near her to medicate OR put down. So now we are trying to catch the culprit, deter others, and get the coup in solid shape asap. Matters of importance and hobbies?-- to appreciate every day, love my friends and family, read a good book, enjoy a little wine and good food, take life as it comes and TRY not to complain. That's it in a nutshell.

Welcome to BYC, we're in Indianapolis. Sorry to hear about your little bantam. The raccoons around here are vicious, sounds like that could be your culprit! Good luck with your coop. There are a lot of Hoosier and Hoosier transplants here, make sure you see the Indiana Members List and feel free to mark your calendar for Chickenstock 2010, the link is below!!
BYC is a great place to be!

Thanks guys! Still trying to figure out how to navigate the site...will definitely check out the Indiana page.
Little Banty is still running around on one leg and keeping up ok. Hate to put him/her down when there is so much spunk! I hate to see the little thing running on 1 leg with help of opposite wing for balance. But who can understand mother nature?? Wait and see...
