Hi, My name is Willow Farwood, I am building Little Feather Farm, a heritage breeds conservancy and hatchery, near Libby, Montana.
I am currently in the process of establishing flocks with a goal of production by late spring 2014.
I have roughly 50 chickens and 4 turkeys.
My breeds are, Americauna, Barred Rock, Buff Orpinton, Cuckoo Maran, and Lakenvelders.
This spring,I will be increasing with silver laced and blue red laced Wyandottes, Rhode Island Reds, Leghorn, and Bantys; Silver Seabright, and Millfluer Barcles.
My first flocks were test flocks. I wanted to see if these breeds would do well at 3500' elevation, and with Montana's wildly diverse weather, with a minimum of housing and care.
When I say minimal, I am saying a well insulated coop, but no supplemental heat until it reaches 10° or lower, little additional lighting, and an excellent feeding programs.
I have had little comb freeze problems, with the Marans, Barred Rocks, and Buff Orpington, and they have been producing eggs like crazy since January.
My Marans and Americaunas are my favorites, for gentle temperament, the Barred Rocks are more dominant and aggressive, and the Buff Orpingtons are the sweetest birds of all.
I had raised Wyandottes before, so I knew they would do well here, and like their personalities and productivity. The Leghorns, will be another cautious experiment, but I need a hardy white egger. My grandmother raised them in Northern Minnesota, and did well with them. My Lakenvelders have done well, even though that are reputed to be non-setters, my have been excellent broodies!
This spring, I will also be getting more turkeys, ducks and geese. It promises to be Very busy here this year, at Little Feather Farm!
Looking forward to getting to know you, Willow Farwood
Bless the Beasts, all creatures great and small
