Hi, everyone! I've been lurking and learning here for a few months, as we researched for our coop and chickens, built the coop and brought our ladies home, but now I'm finally registered!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I'm new to backyard chickens/small flocks, but I've raised larger flocks of broilers and layers in farm settings before, primarily Poulet Rouge broilers and Australorp layers. A little over three weeks ago, we brought home: 1 Araucana named Mae West, 1 Australorp named Karma, 1 RIR named Rosie and 1 Dark Cornish named Cordelia. They are about 15 weeks old now. We bought them from a fantastic young local CSA farmer. They're doing great, and we spend way too much time sitting in the backyard watching them.
(2) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Google and word-of-mouth; also the publicity list turned over to me in order to organize this year's Mad City Chicken Coop Tour!
(3) What are some of your other hobbies?
farming, gardening, cooking, pickling, knitting, spinning, handsewing, cycling, hiking, reading, writing...
(4) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I live with my partner Matt and our girlies-- two cats-- Basil Hayden and Roo/Rue/Roux. I work on a small CSA farm and orchard just south of Madison and volunteer on another one and volunteer with several other local gardening/food related groups and projects.
I'm glad to be here and looking forward to learning more!
