Thank you! Yes we love them. They all have names and a coop I had custom built that I designed and had a guy put it together for me. I used things from our renovation in our house that I had saved such as our old kitchen cabinets are nest boxes, the door was our bathroom door, the walls were from a large crate that our new front doors came in. I pretty much only had to buy the materials for the roof. It is very functional and I love it!

Thanks everyone! I understand most of chicken stuff but want to find out more about broodiness. I have been collecting eggs but want my Cochins to hopefully go Broody in the spring. Not sure if its ok at this point to take all eggs or not

You can't really tell when a hen will go broody but, it's great when she does because you could replace her eggs with some of other breeds that you buy, and she will raise them as her own.

Broodies are better than incubators.

Not sure if you have seen them, but there are a couple of articles in the BYC Learning Center on broody hens, one which details the differences between using them and incubators. There is also a long thread on broodys in general. With collecting eggs, if you want a to hatch some whenever a hen goes broody, date the real eggs and collect as many as you will want the hen to try and hatch, (store them properly) then just keep replacing the oldest eggs with the newest ones until she decides to set, then put the real eggs under her. People often have a fake egg or eggs in the nest and collect the real eggs, don't know if fake eggs really make them go broody any faster, but they are a good idea anyhow to keep hens laying in the nests and help prevent egg eating etc.
