Greetings from Oregon

Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock!:welcome BYC is a helpful site providing all of the information you need to know about poultry. There is always space for members on the BYC roost!:highfive: I bet you will love your Indian Runners, they have more of an erect posture than other duck breeds as well.

Hope you enjoy it here as much as we all do!

View attachment 1657051 Congratulations on your move to a new house and new state!! Your are gonna love it here... what area do you live? My husband grew up in Georgia and he ended up here in Oregon through the military... says he'll never go back to the south, even though we could easily afford our dream farm there.

I would love to get ducks someday, just don't have enough space where we are. Is the kids playhouse low to the ground like a shed? That'll make a great duck house! Best wishes in your new adventures!

Hey! We're in East Oregon in a "steppe" climate I believe. It's a lot drier here than back home and I love it. We get seasons and the summer isn't humid along with being hot. Property taxes are higher here but there seems to be more emphasis on local amenities like parks. We like to hike and do out doorsey activities, and there seems to be endless possibilities within a short drive. I would be hard pressed to move back at this point.

Welcome to the BYC! Great people and when you have a question, there is always someone here with an answer.

I hate slugs to, but my solution is beer. Take some cheap beer put it in a bowl and set the bowl out near the plants you are protecting. Several bowls in fact. The rest you drink. Slugs are very attracted to the smell of beer fermenting and will drown themselves in it. I very handily solved our slug problem.

Thank you for the kind welcome!

Yes, I did the beer trap thing. Doesn't work too well when you practically live in a swamp! For many weeks I tried to make it work. Trouble was the amount of slugs, and the area I was trying to control. I hand tilled up a veggie patch as well as clearing a fence line to add a flower garden. Then seeds were germinating on the patio, and I had baskets other places. In Mobile, AL we had almost daily rain showers which dilutes the trap unless they are covered carefully. My husband asked wryly if slugs were like ants and they would just keep coming??

Around here, I think the beer traps will be more effective due to it being drier and less habitable for the slugs. I'll definitely give it another go if they present a problem again.

It is very nice to have you here!

Ducks lay very nice eggs too!

I tried the beer trick many years ago, didn't attract one slug - maybe I used the wrong brand of beer. Had to go back to bashing them(ick) with a rock.

I think the slugs appreciated my taste in beer. They really liked the Yuengling. :drool

However I switched to warm yeasty water which didn't smell as long but was cheap to make in large batches. I don't know what the egg cycle is like for that species of slug but they were endless and insatiable.

Yes tons of state parks around! I live in the valley Portland metro area, but have travelled the state (and into Washington) quite a bit, especially when I had horses and went to drill competitions, camping & trail rides. My favorite areas were toward Bend/Prineville and of course, the beach. But between mountains, desert and ocean, there is pretty much every activity imaginable within reach. My hubby's not willing to give up the seasons either, and I could never survive long term with the humidity in the south. I lasted 10 months in Nashville as a venturing young adult before I thought I would die and finally moved back to good ole Oregon!
