I have always wondered if my barred rock was an anomaly of upbringing ( she was hand raised) or her personality was a breed trait.. Guess I will head over to the threads linked here...

Hello! I'm not sure how you are doing with your flock or whether you have gotten a start on it yet, but I have some ways to help keep dogs out. I double fenced and gated my chickens in. They have a coop and pin that is behind their own fence. I berried 4x4 pressure treated posts along the underside of all the fence and gates to make it dig proof. I have two Weimaraner (bird dogs) that would love to get to my flock. I built a concrete foundation made of cinder blocks that the coop and pin sit on top of. This keeps rodents,raccoons, and other predators from entering the chicken area. I also used wire mesh on the fence, gates, and pin. So far I have had zero issues and I plan to keep it that way! Finally landed and got some birds. We closed late on June 3rd so I bought pullets from a nice family in Springfield ... The Sussex, three barred rock two Easter egg and two silver Wyandot. My dog is curious but she isn't fence savvy so far so good.

So many projects I just slapped together a coop mostly from wood I found on the land, The fence was also reclaimed from the barn, it's 4 foot 4" mesh with chicken wire over it. So far the dog stays out and the chickens in.

It's been interesting watching the hens establish a new pecking order. They were housed with older birds before so the Sussex have been establishing themselves as the dominant clique.

I am a little diss appointed in the barred rocks. My last one was my favorite bird ever. These are pretty bland so far.
