I've been wanting to raise chickens for more than a year, and I finally convinced the husband! We are expecting our first delivery of chicks in a few days and are ridiculously excited about this; we are starting out with 5 chicks (3 different breeds). Our second batch of chicks (6 chicks - 6 different breeds) will come mid-June. Chicken math has begun because I've already asked my local feed and grain store about a couple of their chicks!
Besides my husband, we have 3 kids (ages range from 10 - 17), a mixed-breed dog, fish, and a turtle. The kids are very excited too! Although our dog is small and is getting older, I won't trust her around the chicks. She understands the "Leave it" command and I plan on reinforcing that with her while I have her on a leash. I think once the chickens are full-grown, she may end up being afraid of them; she's only 13 pounds - but I will probably never trust her anyway - lol!
Anyway, I've already spent so many hours reading this website and others, books, and talking to people who own chickens. I feel I'm well on my way to a full-blown chicken addiction.
